PSA Peugeot Citroën is the second world manufacturer to launch on the market a turbocharged engine with direct fuel injection fully E100 compatible.
Design of a FLEX DI turbocharged engine of almost 80 kw/L constitutes a challenge. Indeed, the impacts of the specific properties of this fuel here are strongly amplified: High cylinder pressure, more important fuel flow, corrosivity, impact on oil lubricity, brutal evaporation at 79°C….
These characteristics lead to modifications on some parts, such as fuel system (design, coating), valves and valve seats (material, exhaust gas temperature, design), pistons (surface roughness of 1st ring, design), de-oiling system (dilution and evaporation models) or turbocharger (thrust bearing material).
This paper shows in details the concerns we met during the development phase of the 1.6 THP flexfuel and the solutions we implemented with help of our suppliers.
At the end, compared to the replaced engine (2.0 natural aspirated), this new engine is 15% more powerfull and its fuel consumption is 26% lower.
