At low temperatures, an optimum has to be found between rapid engine warm-up and cabin heating for thermal comfort.
A complete 1-D model has been developed and is applied on a gasoline engine. It addresses several aspects of the engine, cabin comfort and fuel consumption. It has been checked with experimental results of engine warm up at different temperatures.
Several heating strategies have been proposed and simulated. A numerical comfort model of the driver was used to assess the proposed strategies.
Global thermal-management strategies have to be defined at the vehicle level to grasp all the important aspects and choose the most pertinent.
