Emission regulations (Euro6c, Euro7) are evolving towards a strong decrease in vehicle emissions and also fuel consumption. According to the vehicle class, this constrains imply to have a better combustion management process and/or to use after treatment devices (SCR, LNT, etc...). In this context, the cylinder pressure information is a usefull indication because the combustion process can be real time controlled acting both on the injection (quantities, phasing) and on the EGR rate to ensure an optimized system performance. Moreover, the cylinder pressure sensor (ICPS) introduction allows to remove some sensors by the use of model based approach leading to an overall system cost decrease. The Continental system approach developed in this article has enhanced the In Cylinder Pressure Sensor development, integrating the requirements from an in-house advanced strategy including software and ECU hardware developments in order to guarantee the targeted performance on the vehicle.
