Abstract: Electrically driven charging systems are subject of investigation since many years in the automotive sector. Both vehicle manufacturers and suppliers have introduced various concepts. In this paper the potential of electric supercharging with higher system voltage level is investigated for a 2.0 l gasoline engine. Focus was given to response behavior, options for steady-state operation and finally driving cycle conditions.
A significant improvement of engine response was achieved especially at low engine speeds, both with 12 V and 48 V systems. With electric supercharging the engine response behavior becomes almost independent of engine speed, as well for load step as also for vehicle acceleration. In the driving cycles a fuel consumption benefit of about 1 % was achieved, again almost independently of the voltage level.
The main advantages in establishing a 48 V system for the investigated engine size are the higher energy recuperation during regenerative breaking and increasing options for hybridization. However, with larger engine displacement the requirement for higher voltage level will become more significant also for the boosting system.
Overall, electric supercharging offers new degrees of freedom for the control and operation of internal combustion engines. Especially with the combination and sum of several individual potentials it can contribute to an improved emission and performance characteristic of an engine.
