The SIA Powertrain Technologies Expert Community is taking up its role to study various Powertrain Technologies and to gather and combine the knowledge and experience of its members.

The Community brings together experts from Stellantis, Renault, Plastic Omnium, Valeo, Faurecia, Michelin, Bosch, Vitesco, Volvo Trucks, Delphi, IFPEN, TotalEnergies, IAV, EMC, University of Orléans and Yellows.

In this context, the Expert Community has created a working group to study the technology of Hydrogen Internal Combustion Engines. It explains the technology of hydrogen combustion engines, its efficiency and integration in a vehicle and its powertrain, as well as the merits and challenges of this technology. The challenge of integrating an hydrogen storage on-board the vehicle is addressed, as well as the overall Well to Wheel and Life Cycle Assessment. Emissions of such a powertrain as well as emission reduction technologies are addressed.

And finally the hydrogen ICE powertrain is compared with other solutions such as hydrogen fuel cell systems and CNG ICE powertrains.

This paper combines the result of a first study, which is now shared with the actors of the Automotive Industry.
