Upcoming CO2 and emissions regulations, imposing ever stricter limits and involving highly dynamic real-life driving profiles, face the powertrain with new challenges for which electrification shows promising, cost-effective prospects. Electrified components, on top of known CO2 emissions and driveability benefits, give a new freedom for defining the engine operating points, calibration and transient response. This paper investigates how this can offer a new shift in the CO2-emissions tradeoff of Diesel engines. This study focuses on simulation results to give an overview of the opportunities brought by 48V belt-starter-generator based mild-hybrid systems and 12 or 48V electric superchargers in terms of NOx and CO2 trade-off for Diesel engines. This paper is composed of five parts. After introducing the regulation context of this study, NOx formation and NOx emission reduction approaches are discussed. The third part presents the components studied. In a fourth part, the simulation approach is introduced, before discussing the results obtained.
