This work presents a simulation study on engine cold start applying a system engineering model for the domains engine (including combustion, pollutant formation and exhaust aftertreatment), thermal management, drivetrain and control. Dedicated solver techniques are applied based on a time-scale analysis of the different domains. The reduced computational effort ensures fast results in office studies and, in addition, the real-time capability of the engine model enables its application on HiL environments. The model is validated for specific parts with steady-state and transient measurement data. The model is applied to investigate engine, cooling and exhaust aftertreatment performance during a real-world driving cycle.
