As we can read in numerous press articles, one of the next main topics for hybrid vehicle fuel consumption reduction may result from the anticipation of the driving energy request by implementing GPS data and telematics services in the control strategy of the powertrain. For example, in the 2011 published announcement on SustainableBusiness.com [1]: “Toyota Motor Corp. and Microsoft Corp. announced a partnership to build a software platform for information technology in upcoming electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles [..]
The next-generation telematics services [..] encompasses energy management, GPS system [..]
The carmaker believes that, as electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles become more popular, such systems will rely more on telematics services for achieving efficient energy management”.
This paper presents the results of enhanced system simulation methods, here employed to identify the potential fuel consumption reduction enabled by appropriately implemented novel telematics systems (i.e. GPS & Information and Communication Technologies, or e-Horizon) on the example of a state-of-the-art hybrid electric vehicle in real driving conditions on existing roads.
To demonstrate this potential, the Toyota Prius 3 Hybrid vehicle [2], which is one of the bestselling fullhybrid cars in the world, is selected as the baseline vehicle for this investigation.
