Reliability is a field that academics tend too much to abandon to the benefit of manufacturers who implements at minimum cost. Many schools are therefore in competition: Study of the robustness of a product, establishment of quality assurance based on the use of standards, sustainability taking into account the failure analysis of components and systems. But all these methods are perfectible and have a cost. Also, Reliability of a component depends on its resistance to a range of stress induced on it during its operational life. Component breakage happens when induced stress becomes more important than the resistance of the component. But elements in nature are not so easy.

It is useful to look at the variability of capacity to resist as well as stress. In addition, a system is composed of several hundreds of active and passive components. So, the concept of reliability is slightly different. It will depend on the probability that the physical degradation of components appear. Increasingly, companies prefer to accelerate the failure of system using heavy equipment such as HALT or HASS. But questions about these methods: do they have a physical sense? Induced degradation, is it representative of what will happen in the operational life of the system?
