Prototyping a Mechanically Recycled PMMA: Challenges and First Successes

 

This article, presented at the SIA NeMMo Congress and selected by the scientific committee and participants, highlights the collaborative work of Valeo, Röhm and Renault on mechanical recycling of PMMA from end-of-life automotive parts. The study details the full process, from dismantling rear lamps to advanced sorting, compounding and prototype testing, demonstrating both technical challenges and successful outcomes. It also addresses sustainability indicators, economic constraints, and the potential of combining mechanical and chemical recycling approaches to enhance circularity. This pioneering work shows how cross-industry collaboration can accelerate the transition toward more sustainable mobility solutions.
