The electrification of powertrains is a key lever for the decarbonization of passenger and commercial vehicles. The share of pure electric vehicles will grow at a sustained rate over this decade, but thermal engine equipped vehicles could still represent 50% of sales in Europe by 2030. Combustion engines and electric motors will coexist or, more precisely, work in synergy thanks to hybridization.

In Europe, research investments seem to be now focused on electrification technologies. But recent announcements by Chinese and Japanese manufacturers about the development of high efficiency engines show that other regions have not given up.

The point is to know what the development potential of the combustion engine is and what research and development issues need to be addressed in the coming years. A working group has been created within the SIA “Powertrain Technologies” Expert Community to address this point. The aim is to draw up a broad outline of what internal combustion engines could be by 2030: what are the technological options to be implemented? what are the main roadblocks and challenges?

This study is based on the contributions of experts of community and on recent publications whose richness shows the topicality of the subject.
