This paper describes how solutions for control of Hybrid Electrified Vehicles (HEV), using model-based mathematical calculations and available static and dynamic predictions from connectivity, are able to achieve better performances in energy reduction, under emissions regulations and driving conditions constraints, with adaptations to customer behavior.
Motivating factors are discussed first, enabling today integration of more and more complex algorithms into real-time embedded controllers in cars.
General optimization problem is then presented and defined so that to clarify the different parameters to be considered in such theoretical approach; the Pontryagin Maximum Principle (PMP) is explained, on how to be applied on different use-cases: eco-driving, torque split and thermal management, each use-case having one or more degrees of freedom.
Some applications performed in several demo-cars at Vitesco-Continental company are then described, designed in cooperation with some OEMs that demonstrated significant gains in CO2 reductions, up to 10% from statistical tests in real driving conditions.
