In the early 2000s, the headlamps were impressive and taking an expressive place on the front of the vehicle – Peugeot 207, Opel Corsa…-. This optic styling was some time “globular” and often stretched and curved. In order to take in account all this variation styling of the outer lens, the complex optical surfaces and the projector module "halogen or xenon" have been pushed more and more into the background of the headlamp. This new architecture was also linked with all the optical and mechanical issues for the packaging –gap with dynamic movements, light cone shadowed by the internal bezels, thermal proximity with the outer lens…-. Designer feels blocked by all these constraints… Then, another time begins: controlled light and Technology LED: the 2010s. Controlled light means to create miniaturized optical systems. They must be thinner and closer to the style lines shapes of the outer lens which is designed more and more on the wings of the car. So, Valeo innovates with a smart optical system with contoured lens and rectangular. The challenge is on the height of this lens: only 40mm. This system can follow the curves of the outer lens given by the designers, and gives with a new possibility: to make the finest headlamp. This article presents this original optical concept on the low beam and high beam. Some examples of these new possibilities of architecture are showed in styling headlamps. The target is to be near of the outer lens, without thermal issue, whose performances rival and exceed with the best Xenon.
