Every year environmental legal constraints are growing in the automobile market. Car manufacturers have to find more and more efficient powertrains to respect our planet and government objectives. Automatic transmissions can help to reduce vehicle consumption by means of a good conception and a good calibration. The torque converter clutch is a big contributor to the powertrain fuel consumption for the old vehicles. This document will expose the methodology developed at Punch Powerglide based on tests and simulations to optimize (define) an efficient torque converter that can be locked up at very low engine rpm and that can provide an adequate driveline isolation for driving comfort.
