This paper presents a new ceramic capacitor technology for power electronic applications. The novel components are designed for the use as high-voltage DC-Link capacitors in converter and inverter topologies. A recently developed ceramic material with extraordinary high permittivity at high DC-bias fields and a process to co-fire this material with electrodes are the basis of this innovation. The major advantages of the new ceramic capacitors are very compact size, low equivalent series resistance, extremely low self- inductance and highest current handling capability. All these beneficial properties remain even at high operating voltages and temperatures.
