Drowsiness is a silent killer on the road. In the U.S. for example roughly 100,000 police-reported crashes annually involve drowsiness and/or fatigue as a principal causal factor, in Europe and Asia this figure is even considerably higher. Carmakers have started to install first drowsiness detection systems in the car. These systems however are only available for new cars, and the user interface typically consists of a simple warning. The paper describes a refined method to detect drowsiness based on domain knowledge and vehicle behavior feature extraction, suitable for integration into an easy-to-use aftermarket solution. This system is able to continuously monitor and inform drivers on the evolution of their drowsiness status. Data obtained from our field tests in Europe and China are presented and an outlook is given into future developments/applications of drowsiness detection.
