Euro6 and LEVIII emission legislation and new incoming test cycles and procedures will introduce challenging targets for GDI engines in terms of combustion system design and control. The aim of the work is to describe the main guidelines for the definition of the injection strategy for particular engine operating points, considering the limitations on emission, fuel consumption and performance, with the support of engine simulation and experimental tests validation. The paper presents an analysis of different injection strategies considering the main control parameters. The models of the combustion system and the engine simulations help to estimate the contribution of the injection parameters (timing, number of injections per stroke and injection pressure) on the mixture formation and the engine emissions; selected injection patterns are then tested on engine, where a fine tuning is possible. The applied methodology allows a deep understanding of the variables involved in the injection, mixture formation and combustion processes in GDI engines, in particular relating to particle emission. It can be used both as a guide for the control design and as a basis for the fine calibration of GDI engines fulfilling future emission legislation.
