After the introduction of the first full LED headlamps, the automotive industry is in heavy discussions in CO2 reductions, targets and penalties. Lighting is also considered as a potential contributor in the savings.  Among the headlamp lighting functions the low beam can contribute most for CO2 reduction, because of its absolute power consumption and the high average usage time of the headlamp functions.  On the other hand especially the low beam performance contributes a lot to traffic safety during nighttime driving. Therefore the performance aspect is a dominant driver for car manufacturer and set makers in the market since the beginning of headlamp main functions on vehicles. In order to demonstrate that these two aspects are no contradiction a new concept for a LED low beam will be presented. With an energy consumption of 14 W for the complete low beam the new concept will play a strong role in this CO2 discussion without any compromise in performance.  The coming module will be compared to current halogen and xenon headlamp systems concerning energy consumption, headlamp performance rating and traffic safety. For performance aspects the CIE 4-45 standard will be taken to proof that this concept has the potential to be far above halogen performance. The target is not to give up performance and traffic safety for a reduced power consumption and CO2 emission.
