This paper summarizes the current regulatory status for LED light sources allowing different manufacturers to supply with a high volume base into a strongly growing global market. Historical context as well as harmonization activities in between the International Automotive Lighting and Light Signaling Expert Group (GTB = Groupe de Travail “Bruxelles 1952”) as well as SAE committees will be discussed. Further on, the framework and strategy for standardizing light sources for front illumination purposes like low and high beam with different levels of functionality will be laid out. Recent success in defining common performance requirements for LED components, modules and light sources is reviewed.
