To meet more stringent legislation and reduce significantly CO2 emissions, hybridization is one of the most promising technical solutions. A new
48V affordable hybrid approach was then developed to reach large market penetration of hybrid powertrains: Hybrid4All. For such architectures, first challenge is to optimize system architecture, technologies and components sizing, in order to find the best compromise between cost and CO2 benefits. The second one is to develop an optimal management of energy, in order to control levers for fuel economy that are regenerative braking and electric modes.
A promising approach consists in predicting the upcoming road profile, to anticipate energy recovery events (traffic lights, stop signals, roundabout, slope...) in order to manage the battery state of charge, and identify electric driving areas (low speed limit, congested driving, parking…).
To go further in that way, this approach can also be used to assist eco driving. For instance, by activating automated vehicle functions, such as “connected” injection cut off time control before deceleration, energy recovery can be maximized.
VALEO demonstrated the very promising CO2 benefits with CO2Pilot concept that was implemented on a democar by coupling hybrid powertrain management and road profile prediction.
