Two different types of 3D CFD calculations have been performed and combined in this work. The multi-phase flow simulations through a last generation common rail Diesel injector have been done with applying different fuel temperatures in order to show the influence of cooler or warmer Diesel oil on the internal cavitation behaviour in the nozzle. Results from these injector calculations have been transferred via the so called nozzle file into the mixture formation / combustion simulation within the combustion chamber, which finally reflected the influence of fuel temperature on the overall engine performance.
Due to the short turnaround times and the robustness the applied methodology has great engineering value.
