Multi-variable, Model Based Control (MBC) algorithms are becoming more widespread in powertrain development programmes due to their ability to cope with complex multi-variable systems such as dual EGR and bi-turbo applications, whilst reducing development cost and time. Now that these control concepts are a realistic alternative to the traditional PID controllers, engineers at Ricardo have been considering the remaining steps to bring them into production. This paper provides a summary of the MBC algorithms and then discusses their impact on OBD algorithms and ISO 26262 safety process. The example of EGR and boost control of a Diesel engine is used throughout to illustrate the different scenarios. This highlights the need to consider the impact of OBD and safety early in the control design process.
