Cabin acoustics is one of the most difficult challenges in the truck design process. Actually the acoustic environment in the cabin results of many noise sources (e.g. engine, transmission, exhaust and air intake systems…) which interact with each other and whose transfer paths are multiple (structure-borne or air-borne). The main noise contribution in low frequency range (<300 Hz) is typically airborne. Air intake and exhaust systems are the main airborne low frequency contributions to interior noise.
In the present paper, the calculation method of the noise contribution in cabin of a low frequency sources (a complete air intake system for example) is presented. The simulation process is divided into 3 steps: first, the calculation of sound propagation from the source to exterior cabin panels; then, the transformation of the acoustic pressure into appropriate forces on cabin structural mesh; finally the calculation of in-cab noise from this structural excitation.
The paper specially deals with exterior propagation model, from sources to exterior cabin panels. The geometry of this model includes exterior cabin panels as well as the chassis and the driveline. Several simplifications are needed in order to reduce the number of finite elements, which will later be explained (e.g. rigid wall model and simplification of the geometry).
The validation of the propagation model is proven thanks to a comparison between the outputs of the calculations and experimental measurements. The confidence level is also assessed and allows to use the method for quantitative prediction of the sound pressure in the cabin.
