Filtration of engine irregularities becomes a more and more important topic because of excitation increases and vehicle weight reduction. Usual filtration devices like rotational inertia and stiffnesses have shown their limitations. Since a few years the rise of pendulum absorber, which consists a major technological breakthrough, has led to think over the numerical simulations approach.
Main pendulum equations have been extracted from bibliography and adapted to the automotive environment. These linearised equations allow explaining the main physical phenomena.
Nevertheless, this useful method from a pedagogical point of view is no longer sufficient to take non- linearities into account especially when oscillation amplitudes become high.
Therefore, complete pendulum equations have been integrated in a 1D simulation tool. Despite its inherent limitations (single oscillating mass, no roller), the model shows a satisfying correlation level. Furthermore, the low CPU time allows to carry out a great number of calculation. This point is a key factor at the project stage. In certain life situation (engine shut down), pendulum component may have an erratic behavior. A 3D rigid body model has been proposed to address this kinematic issue.
In some cases, this 3D pendulum model may be integrated in a 1D model of the powertrain so as to take the interactions between the pendulum and the drive line into account.
