The Gate Drive Unit (GDU) of an IGBT power stage determines in a great extent the switching behaviour of the IGBTs. But the driver configuration is not only influenced by the electrical performance to be reached. In automotive applications the safety requirements based on the ISO 26262 have to be fulfilled and this leads to special layout and implementation of the gate drive unit. An ASIC was developed which uses both, redundancy and monitoring, to realize an effective, reliable and safe gate drive unit with excellent performance.
