To investigate and exploit the synergy between a gasoline engine with direct injection and an electric motor in a hybrid powertrain, this paper presents an overall system model with detailed demonstration of engine dynamics concerning fuel efficiency and emissions. The model is validated using engine test bench measurements. The simulation with overall system model delivers plausible results within relative short computation time. A primary study featuring the impact of engine displacement on fuel consumption and emissions is carried out for the NEDC. The results indicate that, for a PHEV with less engine operating time in partial load, the stratified charge combustion is still able to increase the fuel efficiency of engines and thereby creating a powertrain with higher maximum engine power output at no cost in terms of fuel consumption.
