A software tool to compute the optimal energy management strategies of hybrid vehicles is presented. This Hybrid Optimization Tool (HOT) is based on optimal control theory, namely, on Pontryagin’s minimum principle and shooting methods. An effective implementation of HOT based on array operations and on the Picard’s algorithm is presented. A first set of simulation results illustrates the use of HOT for the automatic generation of optimal strategies when system’s parameters and configuration are modified. Additional results assess the use of automatically-generated optimal strategies when incorporated into an Amesim simulator.
