Legislative and market requirements for ever lower fuel consumption and CO2 emissions maintain the pressure to improve gasoline engine efficiency. This study has investigated technology combinations that deliver the fuel consumption levels needed for a 2020 gasoline engine. The Magma engine concept is characterised by a high compression ratio and low bore to-stroke ratio employed in a downsized direct-injection gasoline engine. An advanced boosting system and intakevalve closing strategies are used to control combustion knock while maintaining specific performance. Stoichiometric and lean-burn combustion system options have both been investigated.
