Measurements with different charge motion strategies (baseline configuration, Tumble, Swirl) were performed on a single cylinder gasoline DI engine at boosted operation (1.4 MPa IMEP) at an engine speed of 2000 rpm. To show the influence of a large scale charge motion, different valve timings were applied. Thus, turbulent kinetic energy as well as the residual gas content can be varied. A second solution to increase the turbulent kinetic energy is the reduction of the intake valve lift.
Another strategy to reduce particle number emissions using a multi-hole solenoid injection system is an increase of the injection pressure. Therefore it was varied from 20 MPa to 30 MPa.
Additional thermodynamic analysis of the in-cylinder pressure trace using a Three-Pressure-Analysis helps to interpret the effects of the different settings and can help to understand the particulate formation process.
