Emission and fuel economy legislations around the world are driving the switch from Naturally Aspirated to downsized Turbocharged Direct Injection gasoline engines. This paper focuses on the targets and solutions for high volume production in the 0.8-1.6L category. This segment is extremely sensitive to the on-cost of these additional systems. Furthermore while many keep their 4 cylinder architecture, there is a significant number and volume of 3 cylinder engines emerging too.
Simple architecture and low cost targets should not be confused with low technology however. These engines pose new challenges to the boosting system due to the magnitude and spacing of the exhaust pulsation.
The new 3rd Generation of Honeywell gasoline turbocharger range features significant upgrades across all sub-systems including high efficiency, low inertia, compressor and turbine aerodynamics, low loss hydrodynamic bearings, monoblock arm and valve wastegate system driven by an electric control as standard.
