In the present paper, the potential of using a 2-stroke concept to find an optimized solution for a low cost, automotive gasoline engine is evaluated. In a first step, the engine architecture retained is described and briefly justified: it is a uniflow scavenged engine, with intake ports in the cylinder and exhaust poppet valves with a variable cam phasing system, and a direct air-assisted fuel injection system. Afterwards, the engine operation is described and analyzed, and its potential is evaluated. The engine behaves as any conventional spark ignition engine at high loads, whereas it starts to operate under controlled autoignition mode for lower loads. In this less usual scenario, some engine parameters other than the spark are vital to guarantee the control over the combustion process and, thus, to optimize the engine outputs: the timing for opening and closing the exhaust valves, the fuel/air equivalence ratio and the injection settings.
The effect of all these engine settings is analyzed and described. Finally, the main performances of the engine at different operating conditions are presented, thus giving a complete overview of the potential of this engine concept.
